The story of What Comes After Love starts with two young people in Japan who wish to form their own love start-up. Later, Choi Hong was studying abroad, she took her cheerful and energetic image to Tokyo. These are purely youthful themes of exploration of the self and of the world. Here comes Aoki Jungo, a novice novelist who also plans to achieve success in the literary field. It’s chemistry, isn’t it? These two directly get into a relationship. Still, as often with young couples, reality begins to come into the picture. They both have different goals in life and pressures from their dreams force them to break up. Choi Hong is physically and mentally scarred while Jungo is left to ponder on a decision he made. People live their lives and go on but the pain never fades away.

The Glow-Up Years

Seven years later, Choi Hong became the dominant personality. She is today a director of a reputable publishing firm in Korea living her best life and leaving the old Jungo that was behind her. She’s successful, she’s confident and she appears utterly nonchalant or indifferent to it all. And then there’s Jungo. All those writing dreams have materialized – he is now a renowned author! Still, even with all this success, Hong is not as ‘over it’ as Haynes is. Indeed, the book that made him popular? It depends on the kind of relationship they have. Well, that must mean that he’s still got memories, sorry’s, and possibly, a last spark of hope for a second shot.

Fate Steps in as Cupid

This is certainly not what they expected when they believed they would never meet each other again in their lives. Jungo has to attend a business meeting in Korea as part of his assignments on the project. As for him, suddenly he has a shot for a face-to-face meeting with Choi Hong again and maybe, just perhaps, do what he should have done ages ago. But, the reunion here is not all fancy and love-birds montage. They have bitter memories to heal from, pent-up emotions to vent, and Korean-Japanese tensions to sort. They have a history, yes, but they’ve grown with time, and a lot may differ between the time when they were respectively sweethearts in Japan.

And just to complicate matters let there be two other individuals who also wish to have their hearts … Allow us to introduce Hong Jong Hyun – he is Choi Hong’s loyal friend but he secretly liked her for 15 years. He has lusted on her for this long and has been waiting for the right time to act and now Jungo is back. What we have on the other side is Nakamura Anne, Jungo’s ex-girlfriend and his editor who isn’t quite ready to give up on him yet. Personally, Anne feels emotions towards Jungo, and she also has a stake in the job he is doing as well since she supports him and is maybe even a coworker.

A New Chapter, Or Just a Re-run?

The pressure is especially on Hong and Jungo. They will have to analyze their emotions, challenge failure in their partnership, and determine whether they can (or should) attempt to revive it. This is not only a story of second-chance love, but an opportunity to view a great production born from a collaboration between Korean and Japanese talents, both of whom experienced life under occupying forces, even if the situations in each case were somewhat different.
